April 2008, Visiting friends, and St George Hotel near Pafos, gluten free
St George Hotel has been refurbished over the winter and the standard has moved up. We've no hesitation in recommending them.
Let's add a string of excellent restaurants:
- Psaropoulos Fish Tavern in Latsi, Polis
- Atrion Restaurant Poseidonos Ave,O pposite the Alexander The Great Hotel
- Papasawas Seagull restauarnt, 7 Posidonos Avenue ont the actual sea front just along from the harbour and here the loos score 11 out of 10. This restaurant is superb.
I always choose Cypriot cuisine and alwasy at small restaurants so they produce their own chips and jacket potatoes, plus they always use red wine Vinegar and olive oil.
If in doubt get the Greek Travelcard.
Again it's meeting friends that make a holiday great.
November 2007 Holiday to Cyprus, Gluten free at St George Hotel
Good friends, good food, good hotel and good weather all combined to make this a great holiday. We stayed at the St George Hotel near Pafos and there the food is very very good. All the meals were buffet style and you selected what you wanted from a huge array.
This was great as I need Gluten Free. Mind you after five days of even this excellent choice, I wanted to choose from the fuller selection. Here the hotel staff were brilliant, personally introducing me to Andreas, the Maitre D', and eventually to one of the chefs, Koullis. From them I found that their mayonnaise was fine, aubergines in pomodoro sauce were fine, the chocolate cups with lemon mousse were fine, even the chips were OK and so on and so forth. Every day I was shown which of their special dishes were OK. One day they made me a special meringue as the desserts were all pastries, cakes sponges or ice cream. But then there was still a wide selection of fresh and dried fruit plus cheeses. All the genuine cypriot / greek meals at the greek / cypriot restaurants in Cyprus seem to be gluten free eg Kleftiko, Afelia, and we went to several, where there was lovely food and a very warm welcome. The english restaurant called "The Village" in Main Street, Kissonerga, was totally relaxed about it all and I was able to chat to the (English) chef. We agreed on liver, bacon and onions on a bed of mashed potatoes. Brilliant.I thought I'd be OK at the chinese restaurant, Jackie Ma, but they didn't understand the phrase gluten free and I think one of their dishes did have a bad sauce on it, may be Soy Sauce. Hey Ho!
Even O'Neills, the Guinness bar, finally found one dish, a tuna salad, and whilst not the most interesting meal I've ever eaten, the lettuce, cucumber and tomatoes were very fresh and tasty.
Very easy compared with England.
