A Weekend Break in Brighton, Gluten Free.
The job was cat-sitting, the solution was a 'weekend break'.
We started on Friday. Actually at lunch time I tested McDonalds for a burger (gluten free) and chips (gluten free). It's so long since I had chips and I recommend the quarter pounder. I was stunned when the cashier afterwards invited me to bring my gluten free rolls another time so they could make up a proper burger. Now that is brilliant customer service and superb staff training.
Friday evening we visited the Greek Taverna on Western Road near the Old Market Hall in Hove. Angie had Kleftiko and I had Stifado (gluten free,) absolutely superb.
On Saturday we really needed some exercise so we walked to the Marina and had coffee over-looking the yachts, then we walked into town. Donatello's surpassed themselves with a Penne Arrabiata (Gluten free). Tea at 'The Thistle' over-looking the sea, did some window-shopping and bought tickets for Abba Gold, then a bus back and much later a light salad.
Sunday morning we went fruit-picking. Well we really can't desert our allotment and the strawberries and raspberries are in full flood. We also dug up some salad potatoes, loosened some onions and garlics to start drying, sowed some beans to fill in the empty gaps, watered in the greenhouse and planted out some 'Painted Sage'.
Then a late lunch at 'The Hanover' at the top of Queens Park Road, 300 yds beyond the Pepperpot . Now its very selective but the roast lamb is gluten free, the gravy is 'rendered down' and is beautiful. The mint sauce won't suit some GF's as tbey use malt vinegar. Similarly they couldn't say whether the ice cream is GF. But a lovely lunch never-the-less.
Followed at home by a salad with cold new potatoes as a late snack, with strawberries and cream even later.
The weather was lovely and we even managed a walk on the Downs by the Racecourse.
Brilliant
