22 July 2006 19:59:12, Finally the 'hot bed' under the pergola is getting going. We picked the first 'Miniature White' Cucumber today.
Removed the odd weed and sowed the Juliette potatoes; also to honour the anniversary of our first planting last year we planted a bed of Dwarf French Beans (and infilled the gaps in the purple DFBeans); the greenhouse was crowded so we moved the Giant Guatemalan Groundcherries out to a main bed; removed one of the ipomoeas so that three peppers could see the light of day; trimmed back the foliage so that we can see the tomatoes; also transferred some peppers 'White Cloud' from the centre of a tomato bed and planted out some Tagetes; started using the compost from the square composter; (it'll be next year for our own soft fruit so we went to a local PYO fruit for blackberries, raspberries, blackcurrants, and loganberries); skinned the shallots ready for pickling tomorrow; first sunflower in bloom; yellow courgettes are now finished but the green courgettes are prolific; dug potatoes for Sue; read about the wine (below) and have rewarded myself with a sip of Laphroaig; here at the house the peppers are coming along nicely as are the next successions of lettuce, beetroot and carrots; the tomatoes, squashes, banana and finally the herb garden. What a difference a bit of rain makes.
16th July mid-afternoon, it's too hot to garden, so here's an update. Built table and bench yesterday, trimmed back squashes in the greenhouse as they are crowding out the aubergines, and found some Plum Lemon tomatoes coming along nicely. The Caro Rich tomatoes have some forming, in fact all the tomatoes have. Globe Artihokes have some globes forming. Cut grass on the paths, cleared some weeds, watered in the greenhouse. Radish experiment proceeding nicely, the different types have started showing different characteristics.
5th July 2006. Late June we moved the Miniature White cucumbers to the pergola bed, plus two Butternut squashes and with the peppers and dwarf french beans, this is now looking good.
The hubbard squashes and green courgettes are now planted out into main beds and also we have planted out lettuces. (Need to sow some more, in a bucket as before, might also try carrots in a bucket.)
Tomatoes in the beds outside seem to be doing better than those in the greenhouse; need to stake the Tomatillos as they are about to flower; still no pollination on the Crooked Neck squashes; melon has a few flowers on it; aubergines going very well; peppers and chilies seem to be doing OK. Giant Guatemalan Groundcherry will need planting out in about two weeks.
Sowed the Radish experiment, Purple Plum, Red Meat, French Breakfast, Minowase, Cherry Belle, Radis Noir Long Maraicher,
